For many years I’ve asked people, “What is the best meditation?” and they always have a very good answer. And every year for the past ten years or so, this one question has been the same.
So What’s The Best Meditation?
In my experience, it has two types: an out of body experience type and a direct experience type. I’ll talk about out of body experiences later, but first, let’s look at direct experience meditation. Direct experience meditation takes place in a quiet space with a friend and often involves breathing in and out techniques.
A lot of people are drawn to this type of meditation because it allows them to really connect with themselves on a much deeper level than any other type of meditation. While it may seem hard to believe that a person could be meditating for years and never experience these profound feelings of self, the truth is that this is often the case.
I’m sure you have experienced times when you needed to take a break from your routine work schedule, maybe even an extended period of time, to deal with some sort of emotional, mental, or spiritual stress. Your mind was just not processing enough information.
Many people report that as soon as they sit down for meditation they feel lighter and they start to feel the stress starts to melt away. All of this happens without the necessity of having to go to the bathroom.
The next type of meditation I’ll talk about is called a kind of out of body experience or OBE. OBE meditation is often the favorite of people who get spectacular OBEs from deep meditation, such as yoga. So if you have ever had an OBE before, this is the type of meditation that I want to discuss.
A lot of people experience OBE meditation the same way. You are simply sitting in a quiet place and a light comes on and you start floating up. It can be anything from being in the middle of a forest to floating through a cloud. And of course, the most popular OBE is when you’re flying.
The last type of meditation is called direct experience. Direct experience is almost always when you are sitting on the floor and you start to wonder what you are doing and you feel like you’re going to have a vision or it is time to go.
This type of meditation often happens after a good number of deep meditation sessions and it’s a direct experience. It can be just a feeling of being in a room, sitting around a table, or it can be a feeling of floating up into the air. The most common time to use this type of meditation is in the middle of the day.
The best way to remember this type of meditation is to tell yourself that it’s going to be relaxing. The best way to relax is to realize that you’re going to be there for a short while and your mind is going to wander. That’s one of the keys to success in meditation.
As you begin to notice that your mind is starting to wonder, you know that you’re entering into a direct experience. The first thing you do is sit up and just focus on your breathing.
You have to remember that a lot of people take months to realize their first meditation experience. A lot of people don’t realize anything at all in a week. What it comes down to is the proper mindset and the right amount of meditation practice.
